Wellness Support: Primarily, ginkgo is taken to aid in normal cognitive functions. Additionally, ginkgo may support a healthy body’s blood circulation.
Cautions and Contraindications:
The AHPA lists ginkgo leaf as being restricted in use due to its ability to potentiate pharmaceutical MAO inhibitors.
Occasional side effects such as headaches and intestinal upset have been noted but tolerance is generally considered excellent. The AHPA note that ginkgo seed should not be used long-term. Mild adverse effects included dizziness, somnolence, increased frequency of urination, nausea, and abdominal pain. Avoid crude ginkgo plant parts, which have higher concentrations of the toxic ginkgolic acid constituents and can cause severe allergic reactions.
Ginkgo seeds also contain the neurotoxin ginkgotoxin (4'-O-methylpyridoxine). Ginkgotoxin can cause seizures, paralysis, and death in high doses. Ginkgotoxin is present in much larger amounts in ginkgo seeds than leaves. Boiling ginkgo seeds seems to reduce the ginkgotoxin content to safe levels.
The German Commission E Monographs note that before starting ginkgo, one must ensure that an underlying disease requiring specific treatment has not caused the symptoms. They contraindicate ginkgo where there is hypersensitivity to ginkgo preparations.
Be aware that a number of “standardized” encapsulated herbal products now on the market contain synthetic fillers, artificial colors, and sweeteners. Fillers include hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, silicon dioxide, and polyethylene glycol. Remember to read labels to ensure that you are still receiving a pure and “whole herb” product. It is the antithesis of herbal medicine to include artificial substances in an herbal formula.
