Benefits: Licorice can be prepared as a decoction, fluid extract, infusion, powder, syrup, or tincture. Licorice is a friend to the gastric system and is even a useful dietary supplement to support cardiac function and in healthy adults. It can also support a healthy lipid profile already in the normal range.
Cautions and Contraindications: Licorice is relatively safe, however, excessive doses can deplete the body of potassium and cause retention of sodium. Licorice should be taken before eating. Licorice is contraindicated for diabetes, hypertension, liver disorders, sever kidney insufficiency, hypertension, cardiovascular disease or hypoglycemia, and hypokalemia. Do not take if pregnant or nursing.

Formula:
LICORICE SYRUP:
Licorice Glycyrrhiza glabra root: 3 ounces
Slippery elm Ulmus rubra: 1 ounce
Marshmallow Althaea officinalis: 1 ounce
Flaxseed Linum usitatissimum: 1 ounce
Molasses: 1 pint
Honey or raw sugar: ½ pound
Water: 2 pints
Simmer the herbs for 20 minutes in water. Strain and then add the molasses and honey or sugar and stir thoroughly. Bottle the mixture when cool. Label and store in a cool dark place—the refrigerator is ideal. Use one tablespoon, three to four times daily.
