Cautions and Contraindications:
Do not use during pregnancy or nursing. Large doses can cause vomiting, diarrhea, spasms, and symptoms of paralysis. Elecampane may cause contact dermatitis, and may interfere with existing treatment for hypoglycemic and antihypertensive treatments.
Elecampane should be avoided in patients with allergies to elecampane or members of the Compositae/Asteraceae family such as dandelion, goldenrod, ragweed, sunflower, and daisies.
Formula:
ELECAMPANE DECOCTION:
Elecampane Inula helenium root: 2 ounces
Filtered water: 2 pints
Soak the root for two hours in the water then bring to a boil. Simmer slowly while covered for 30 minutes. Strain, return the liquid to a clean saucepan and simmer until the liquid reduces to one pint. Then remove from heat, cool, bottle, and store in a cool place. Use two to four teaspoons in water three times a day. Store in the refrigerator for up to 72 hours.
